Let’s talk GLP-1 Therapy here at Vitality Collective
Starting GLP-1 Therapy: Protecting Your Metabolism from Day One
GLP-1 medications have transformed the landscape of metabolic health and weight loss. These medications help regulate appetite, improve insulin sensitivity, and support meaningful fat loss. However, one important reality that many people are not told early enough is that weight loss does not automatically equal fat loss.
Without the right strategies, the body can lose lean muscle mass along with fat, and that muscle loss can slow metabolism, reduce strength, and make long-term weight maintenance harder.
For adults between 35 and 55, preserving muscle is especially important. Natural age-related muscle decline (sarcopenia) begins as early as the mid-30s. When weight loss is layered on top of that process, maintaining muscle must become intentional.
At Vitality Collective, we encourage every GLP client to focus on three foundational pillars from the beginning:
Adequate protein. Resistance training. Metabolic movement.
Protein intake becomes critical during weight loss because it signals the body to preserve muscle tissue. A general target for most clients is 80–120 grams of protein daily, depending on body composition and activity level.
Strength training also sends a powerful message to the body: “this muscle is needed.” Without that stimulus, the body will often reduce muscle mass during caloric reduction.
Finally, daily movement — especially Zone 2 cardiovascular training — supports fat oxidation and metabolic flexibility without placing excessive stress on the body.
GLP medications help regulate appetite, but they do not replace the need for muscle supportive habits. When nutrition and training are aligned with the medication, clients often experience not just weight loss, but improvements in energy, metabolic health, and body composition.
The goal is not simply to weigh less. The goal is to become metabolically stronger.
Next month we’ll explore one of the most important tools for fat loss while preserving muscle: Zone 2 cardio.
